According to a new series of reports on the U.S. medical imaging device market by iData Research, wide-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems comprise over 85% of the U.S. medical imaging market. The U.S. market for MRI systems includes low-, mid- and high-field MRI systems as well as wide-bore and closed-bore MRIs for all field strengths. Growth in this market is driven by a shift towards mid- and high- field strength systems as they become more and more accessible to various consumers due to declines in average selling prices (ASP).
Mid-field MRI systems represented the largest medical imaging market in the U.S. and will continue to experience steady growth. Mid-field systems are projected to lose some market share as purchasers shift to improved high-field systems, but mid-field systems will still maintain stable market growth until 2022. However, low-field MRI systems are rapidly declining as these systems are becoming obsolete due to both their low image quality compared to mid-field and high-field systems and the accelerating growth in the refurbished market for mid-field systems. Similar to mid-field systems, closed-bore systems will lose market share to wide-bore systems as their popularity continues to grow. The ASP of these systems will continue to fall due to competition from higher field systems.
“High-field systems are over 50% more expensive than mid-field systems and over 250% more expensive than low-field systems,” explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. “This higher price will drive the total market value, as more high-field systems are sold over less expensive modalities.”
Siemens Healthcare is the leading competitor in the U.S. MRI market. Their Magnetom® line of MRI scanners offers a wide range of options and field strengths allowing them to compete in all imaging markets except for intraoperative MRIs. GE Healthcare is the second leading competitor in the market. GE sells three lines of MRI scanners: the Optima®, Discovery® and Signa®. These versatile systems are designed to be used for a broad range of applications in neurological, breast, cardiac, vascular, musculoskeletal and body MRIs.
Additional competitors in the U.S. medical imaging market include Philips Healthcare with three product lines: The Panorama®, Achieva® and Intera®. Other notable competitors include Toshiba Medical Systems, Hitachi Medical Systems, IMRIS and new entrant Samsung, who has recently developed an MRI system and is continuing to develop more products in these segments.
